Celtic Battersea Shield Pendant
A unique shield design pendant out of the ancient tradition presented here in sterling silver with a 6mm garnet. 1.25" from top to bottom including the bale and 13/16" wide.
Symbolism and Meaning of the Battersea Shield
Originally used for ceremonial purposes, the shield was created in approximately the third century B.C.E. and was found in the Thames River in 1857. The design interweaves animal or bird faces with womb-like features around a central circle to indicate a focusing of primal creative forces. The emphasis on the numeral four suggests a connection with the four directions. Because of its ceremonial purpose it may be surmised that the shield was created as a projection of both spiritual protection and spiritual power and blessing. The shield represents a high point in the development of Celtic art.
