Symbolism and Meaning of the Devil Tarot Card
A goat-headed, bat-winged figure with an inverted pentacle atop his forehead strides outward, one hand raised in blessing, the other lowered and holding an inverted torch. Chained to the pedestal on which he sits are a male and female couple with the animal features of horns and tails. The chains are those of material life. The horns and tail of the couple represent man's animal nature. The card signifies extraordinary energy bound by dualism and materialism. This card is the opposite of The Lovers.
