Symbology of the Battersea Shield:
Originally used for ceremonial purposes, the shield was created in approximately the third century BC and was found the the Thames River in 1857. The design interweaves animal or bird faces with womb-like features around a central circle to indicate a focusing of primal creative force. The emphasis on the numeral four suggests a connection with the four directions. The shield represents a high point in the development of Celtic art.
